Day 8 - Sun 16th July Otherwise to be known as Train Day.
It was a Sunday morning in Amish country - very peacefull - a great day for a balloon ride.
| Hot air balloon over the Pennsylvania countryide |
The Amish were all at their Sunday services.
This morning we were headed down to Strasburg to the Strasburg Rail Road.
| We found platform 9 3/4 |
| I think Grandpa needs one of these - its an actual steam engine! |
We got tickets for the 11.30am train to Paradise.
We decided to go with the coach car. beautifully restored with velvet seats.
| The details were so beautiful |
| yes that is a working wood fire stove in the back of the carriage - but it wasn't in use today. |
| The plebs in the open air carriage just had wooden benches |
We got a short 30 min train trip through the Pennsylvania farmlands
Paradise wasn't quite what I expected
But we got to see the engine as it shunted back to the front of the train.
We then headed back to the station.
| cute little engine for Grandpa |
We got a sneak peak at our accommodation for tonight. The Red Caboose Motel
A cool motel made up of cabooses and other train carriages turned into motel rooms.
We booked into the Baggage car as it had enough beds that we could all have our own bed.
| You could take a buggy ride from the motel but we didn't get a chance. |
The motel had taken the old silo and converted it into an observation tower so we climbed to the top.
| at the top of the tower |
| view of Rail Road station from observation tower |
| view of train from observation tower |
The front porch of the motel was a nie place to hang out, watch the trains and the Amish buggies going by.
| Bonfire ready to be lit at the motel. We didn't get to see it fired up though. |
Headed back into Lancaster for dinner at the Red Lobster.
